Oscars fashion recap: the best and worst

The fashion of the 2012 Oscars was a real mess. I don't know what happened, but for the most part it was not good. There were way more misses than hits last night at the Oscars, but I really could not let up on the nominees, so most of my worst dressed list consists of them. Ladies you should know better.

WORST DRESSED:

Berenice Bejo - OK, Elie Saab is one of my favorite designers; his gowns and haute couture collections are always exquisite and stunning, unfortunately Berenice does this gown no justice. The sheer long sleeves, sequin detail and pale mint color are all amazing, just not on her. She is lost in this dress and looks a bit matronly in it.  This gown could've worked on a younger actress who had the skin tone and hair color to complement it.  Bernice you are a first-time nominee, pull it together and stand up straight. You missed your mark last night.

Viola Davis - Another nominee who missed the mark last night was Viola. I'm not going to say this look was a complete miss, because I think her makeup and green drop earrings are on point, but the dress is just a complete mess. There is no part of this Vera Wang mermaid gown that is good. Viola's cleavage is screaming for air, the bodice is  way too tight and the fit is off. Let's not forget the pleating at the bottom and the ruffles, yikes. I would've like this if it was cut at the knee maybe.

Rooney Mara - I applaud you for wearing color, I do, you just don't work this Givenchy number at all. I can't buy your quiet girl, introvert thing  anymore knowing your family has Bloomberg billions and you've been around money and fame your entire life. I love how slinky and delicate this dress is, but I think Rooney is scared to be sexy. Her Dragon Girl Tattoo alter-ego has to be let go. The dark hair, the blunt bangs, the dark lipstick and her pale skin against this white gown are just all wrong. We get it you're edgy, but you gotta master it in a Dita Von Teese way.

Rose Byrne - Clearly Rose is continuing her comedic role in Bridesmaids on the red carpet. When you're thin, you can basically get away with wearing a sock and some gold earrings, but this one shoulder Vivienne Westwood black sequin gown should've been left in the 80s. It's way too tight on the top and then bunchy and loose in the middle, oh and did I mention it has black sequins all over it? This reminds me of something a "working girl" would wear after her late shift. Ah - I just hate it! Rose's skin and makeup are flawless, but with the clunky Jimmy Choo shoes and the silky pin straight hair, I just can't, it's so 80s in a bad way. Rose, you are so beautiful like this.

Jennifer Lopez - Girl, you almost rocked this look, but one thing I really hate is cut-out sleeves, they are so Jersey Shore Snooki. This sequined Zuhair Murad dress is definitely gorgeous and attention grabbing, especially in the front and center, but unfortunately for J.Lo it was too much of a good thing. J. Lo knows how to show off her assets and this dress fit her perfectly, I just think it was too sheer and too MUCH for her with the diagonal and vertical stripes. I would love to see her tone it down for once, I mean we know she looks hot in a tight, sequin, low-cut dress, but what about something more elegant for the occasion?

On to the best.

BEST DRESSED:

Michelle Williams - Here's a nominee who knows how to work her look. I think Michelle has been really consistently on point throughout the 2012 awards season and last night was no different.  She's got that cute, smart, fashion girl look that all the mainstream brands want to dress. This coral strapless Louis Vuitton gown is just so intense, rich and fun. I love how the peplum waist and small bow showed off her waistline perfectly. Her natural makeup, pixie cut, red lip and simple 30 carats worth of Forevermark jewels finish this fashion-forward look off.

Cameron Diaz - Cameron was the Charlize Theron stand-in for the Oscars this year because I could totally see Charlize rocking this way better than Cameron did, but I do think she looks effortless and totally surfer-chic glam. I am not a huge Cameron Diaz fan, but she popped in this nude, fishtail, form-fitting Gucci gown. Her body is so tone and muscular that it could be hard for her to pull this off, but her bright blonde hair, tan skin and splash of sequins make it feminine and gorgeous. She finished it off with the perfect amount of Tiffany & Co. jewels. I just wish I knew what was going on with her face muscles.

Angelina Jolie - Angelina has been a bit safe and reserved throughout the 2012 awards season but she totally came out guns blazing last night in this custom-made strapless black velvet Atelier Versace gown. The thigh high slit, Salvatore Ferragamo heels and platinum Neil Lane jewels completed her glamorous look. The last time I remember loving Angie's red-carpet look this much was at last years Oscars when she wore that sparkling green Atelier Versace gown. I know Angelina can look gorgeous wearing a black plastic bag, but I think the simplicity of this gown coupled with her fierce, sexy attitude makes the dress memorable and her look, one of the best on the red carpet last night.

Shailene Woodley - OK I have to admit I had no idea who this girl was until last night and I still have issues with a 12-year old wearing a Valentino Haute Couture gown and Harry Winston jewels, but anyway I love this look! Ok, so she's actually 20, but I think the mistake a lot of young stars make on the red-carpet is that they are too under-dressed or way over-dressed (think Lea Michele in that Marchesa disaster at the Golden Globes). But clearly Shailene has a great stylist and she is dressed perfectly for the event and her age. The crochet and button detailing on this long-sleeve gown are amazing. I love the soft, beautiful fabric, the high neck and the 70s feel of it. Her hair and makeup complement the simplicity of this look. I love risk takers and girls who don't mind covering up sometimes.

Gwyneth Paltrow - Gwyneth definitely pushed the enveloped with this one and she did it right. I pretty much love almost anything by Tom Ford and Gwyneth has the perfect body for this white one-shoulder column dress. I was wowed by the matching floor-length cape; so brilliant and different. This was a look from Tom's FW 2012 collection, which he showcased  very privately earlier this month in his London showroom. Gwyneth's crisp white look was the one of the most refreshingly original looks of the night. Loved it!

  1. I love your assessment, you are definitely en pointe with your selections!! I didn't mind JLo's cutouts, but then again, she's just a girl from the BX, like she said lol... and man, those critics were ripping into Chailene, but she was my favorite look of the night, so poised, elegant and statuesque!!!

    1. I love Angie! I just think she isn't used to be super sexy on the red carpet anymore so she wasn't sure what to do with the slit.

      Thank you ;)
